But submerged beneath the waves near the Japanese island of Yonaguni is evidence that may well overturn that long-held theory. Of all the famous monuments in Japan, perhaps none is more perplexing than Yonaguni, an underwater rock formation that lies off the coast of the Ryuku Islands.
This strange mask and oddly-shaped figurines were found at Al Ubaíd archeological site in Iraq. They belong to the Ubaíd period, dating 5900-4000 BCE, which predates the Sumerian culture. There is no explanation for the figurine and mask intriguing shape. They are labeled “ritual objects”, as it is common in the archeological circles when uncertain what a particular object represents.
